    Abstract

An introduction is given to the basic definition and conception of the angular momentums of the light field, and the angular momentums of a variety of cylindrical symmetric beams. At the same time, angular momentum may be produced by use of a π/2 mode converter, which modifies the phase structure of the beam. Absorption of the light allows both the spin and orbital angular momentum of a light beam to be transferred to microscopic particles held within optical tweezers, forming an optical spanner. In addition, as optical tweezers and spanners, the potential applications of cylindrical symmetric beams in optical guiding, traps, manipulations and controls of microscopic particles and biological cells are briefly discussed.
